Syllabus - UPDATED 10/17/2023
Skyridge Middle School uses Standards Based Learning to assess and help track students' progress.
Band students are assessed on a variety of standards, and they are listed in the online gradebook.
Non-band classes are assessed on standards that are also listed in the online gradebook. These classes are project based classes, and students will have projects they are working on every class, often over multiple class sessions.
Assignments and concerts for Band students:
Playing assignments and tests
Students will be asked to turn in periodic playing assignments and tests via Google Classroom. Playing tests will be selected from lines in students’ band books, sheet music, as well as other sources.
Concerts and performances
Students are required to attend all concerts and performances for their entire duration. It is the student’s responsibility to inform Mr. Sanchez of a scheduling conflict as soon as possible.
Excused absences are absences that have been arranged with Mr. Sanchez prior to the concert date as far in advance as possible.
Unexcused absences are absences that do not meet the above criteria.
All students who miss a concert or performance (excused or unexcused) must come and see Mr. Sanchez the next day they are in school to make arrangements for a make-up assessment.
Students with excused and unexcused absences have an opportunity to get full credit for their concert grade.
Students who have an excused absence but fail to make an appointment with Mr. Sanchez will receive a "Below Standard" on their concert grade.
Students who have an unexcused absence and fail to make an appointment with Mr. Sanchez will receive an "Insufficient Evidence" on their concert grade.
Jazz Band
Skyridge Jazz Band is known for its musical excellence. Whether performing at school, in concerts, or in the community, the Skyridge Jazz Band has a legacy of thrilling audiences where ever it goes.
One of the reasons the Jazz Band can consistently create memorable experiences for students and audiences year after year is due to one reason: students who are in Jazz Band have made a commitment to making Jazz Band a priority.
In addition to regular concerts, the Jazz Band serves as the ambassadors for the instrumental music program at Skyridge. We perform at school functions as well as events outside of school: Camas Tree Lighting, Jazz Festivals, feeder school tours, Camtown Youth Festival, and other events.
Jazz Band expectations:
Timely communication is key in Jazz Band. Running late to rehearsal? Won't be able to make a rehearsal? Have a scheduling conflict with a performance? Students are expected to E-Mail Mr. Sanchez as soon as they know that there is an issue.
In the rare instance where a student is unable to make it to a performance at the last minute due to an unforeseen circumstance, students are expected to E-Mail Mr. Sanchez and text/call another Jazz Band member to let them know as soon as possible.
Be punctual. Students are ready to play for Jazz Band rehearsals at 8 a.m. That means students walking in at 8 a.m. will be counted as tardy. If there are logistical issues preventing a student from getting to Jazz Band rehearsal on time, please have a parent/guardian E-Mail Mr. Sanchez.
Be prepared. Students are expected to practice their music each day. In addition, they are expected to come to class with their instrument, music, accessories (reeds, patch cables, etc.), and a pencil. Students are provided with reference recordings (when available) and are expected to use them to learn their music. After every Jazz Band rehearsal, students will know what they are to work on for the next rehearsal.
"I have former students talk to me about how Jazz Band is a transformative, energizing, and memorable experience. Initially, members of the Jazz Band see huge challenges: time commitment, difficult music, high expectations, and more. But students who jump in with both feet and put in the work will start to see how this is a truly unique experience that they'll carry with them the rest of their lives."
